THE GARDEN OF GLOVES, by WILLIAM A. PHELON First Line: Hues of the rainbow, green, and red, and blue Last Line: Has been the garden plot where men raise gloves! Subject(s): Boxing & Boxers | ||||||||
HUES of the rainbow, green, and red, and blue, And often purplethese surround the eye "Surround" is properbrilliant circles ring The optics with their simply wondrous dye. Queer vegetables growthe cauliflower, Is oft beheld upon the battered ear, And many a lemon, so the wise ones tell, Is cultivated, grown, and sold, right here! Full many time, the grim inhabitants Of this strange garden hear the little birds, Chirping and twittering above their heads, While the cold referee says numbered words! Full many a time these curious people see Bright constellations, moons, and comets all around, Despite the intervening roofthey see These flashing stars while lying on the ground! Oh, wondrous in this garden'tis a place For sons of Mars, and not for sweetest loves This is the garden, which, for many a year, Has been the garden plot where men raise gloves! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BOXING MATCH by DAVID IGNATOW THE APPOINTMENT by LOUIS SIMPSON ON HURRICANE JACKSON by ALAN DUGAN AMATEUR FIGHTER by NATASHA TRETHEWEY THE CHAMPION (SUGGESTED BY A STORY OF JACK LONDON) by BERTON BRALEY THE BLIND BOXER by WILLIAM HENRY DAVIES HARRY GREB by WILLIAM A.
