Alternate Author Name(s): Pindar, Frances Dickenson; Pinder, F. D.
Subject(s): Ships & Shipping

The harbor throngs with ships tonight,
Like gulls they skim the outer bars,
Their proud sails whitening to the moon,
Their topmasts raking stars.

The brood of swans that Helen launched,
Swart ships of Ophir, slow with gold,
The long grey barks the sagas sing,
The corsair, lean and bold.

And in the forefront of the fleet,
Three fragile ships that found a world;
A nimbus round each slender mast,
Their pennants still unfurled.

From all the Seven Seas they come
Their prideful names forgotten now;
Sea-history heavy in the hold,
Sea-ballads at the prow.

The harbor throngs with ships tonight,
But never sun nor tide will show
The dream that slipped its cable-length
With all the world in tow!
