SHIPS, by FRANCES DICKENSON PINDER First Line: The harbor throngs with ships tonight Last Line: With all the world in tow! Alternate Author Name(s): Pindar, Frances Dickenson; Pinder, F. D. Subject(s): Ships & Shipping | ||||||||
The harbor throngs with ships tonight, Like gulls they skim the outer bars, Their proud sails whitening to the moon, Their topmasts raking stars. The brood of swans that Helen launched, Swart ships of Ophir, slow with gold, The long grey barks the sagas sing, The corsair, lean and bold. And in the forefront of the fleet, Three fragile ships that found a world; A nimbus round each slender mast, Their pennants still unfurled. From all the Seven Seas they come Their prideful names forgotten now; Sea-history heavy in the hold, Sea-ballads at the prow. The harbor throngs with ships tonight, But never sun nor tide will show The dream that slipped its cable-length With all the world in tow! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...LIVE IT THROUGH by DAVID IGNATOW THE SHIP POUNDING by DONALD HALL ULTRAISTA ONEIRIC by ANSELM HOLLO THE NORTH SHIP by PHILIP LARKIN GOOD SHIPS by JOHN CROWE RANSOM CHECKERS by FRANCES DICKENSON PINDER |
