THE INNOCENT MISTRESS: A SONG BY MRS. P., by MARY PIX First Line: When I languish'd, and wish'd you wou'd something bestow Last Line: I shall still have enough for the next. Subject(s): Ignorance; Shame; Singing & Singers; Dullness; Stupdity | ||||||||
When I languish'd, and wish'd you wou'd something bestow, You bad me to give it a Name; But, by Heaven, I know it as little as you, Tho' my ignorance passes for Shame: You take for Devotion each passionate Glance, And think the dull Fool is sincere, But never believe that I speak in Romance On purpose to tickle your Ear. To please me then more, think still I am true, And hug each Apocryphal Text: Tho' I practice a thousand false Doctrines on you, I shall still have enough for the next. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BUFFALO CLOUDS OVER THE MAESTRO HOON by NORMAN DUBIE SIMPLE PHILO OF ALEXANDRIA by NORMAN DUBIE I'M WITH STUPID by PETER JOHNSON ELECTION DAY, 1984 by CAROLYN KIZER AN AMERICAN IN BANGKOK by KAREN SWENSON FESTOONS OF FISHES by ALFRED FRANCIS KREYMBORG TO A BLOCKHEAD by ALEXANDER POPE THE CASE OF SABRINA SIMPSON USCH by FRANKLIN PIERCE ADAMS A BIT OF MULL by FREDERICK HENRY HERBERT ADLER QUEEN CATHARINE: ACT 1, SCENE 1 by MARY PIX THE DECEIVER DECIVED: PROLOGUE by MARY PIX THE SPANISH WIVES: SONG BETWEEN MR.
