When Rita fared along the village walk The eyes of all would followand the talk! The women disapproved her latest dress Marking its cost and fashion in excess. And if a daring child returned her smile His angry mother spoke in ginger style. Ah, but the men! They loitered in the town To laugh with her, approving her gay gown, Or comment on the rose that she had pinned In her dark hair, to flutter in the wind. Then she danced onher careless, happy way Breaking a heartor brightening a day. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MISERY AND SPLENDOR by ROBERT HASS THE APPLE TREES AT OLEMA by ROBERT HASS DOUBLE SONNET by ANTHONY HECHT CONDITIONS XXI by ESSEX HEMPHILL CALIFORNIA SORROW: MOUNTAIN VIEW by MARY KINZIE SUPERBIA: A TRIUMPH WITH NO TRAIN by MARY KINZIE COUNSEL TO UNREASON by LEONIE ADAMS TWENTY QUESTIONS by DAVID LEHMAN CLEONE by HARRIET SEYMOUR POPOWSKI |
