THE BOAT RACE, by ERNESTINE PORTER First Line: Far out at sea, just where the rougher blue Last Line: The resurrected romance of the sea. Subject(s): Boats; Racing | ||||||||
Far out at sea, just where the rougher blue Grows smooth to join the paler blue of sky, A field of gleaming head-stones seemed to lie, Lifting a hundred points of snowy hue. But soon, though one could scarce accept as true The testimony of the startled eye, The white shapes moved, like apparitions shy, And stalked across the waters into view. Then, as they caught the waves' orchestral strain, Growing more bold, they shook their garments out, Bowed to each other, slowly turned about, Curtsied, advanced, to that age-old refrain. And thus, though inland born, was shown to me The resurrected romance of the sea. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...KAL.
