The frosts web the morning: a deer, his Points like twin trees rooted But bereft of leaves, borne as one trophy, is Running nimblefooted, Hasting down for a return to autumn With this wintertoken, Grasped from the mountain as from some Storm-carved high tree broken. Time was his thought but to reach the crest, Proud achievement of years; There, with snowfall come, he longed again to test The autumn trail. His ears Catch sound of falling leaf; so eagerly He sniffs the laden breath Of autumn's richness! Happily ...
