Last Line: Hastening ... Toward ... His death?
Subject(s): Autumn; Deer; Seasons; Fall

The frosts web the morning: a deer, his
Points like twin trees rooted
But bereft of leaves, borne as one trophy, is
Running nimblefooted,
Hasting down for a return to autumn
With this wintertoken,
Grasped from the mountain as from some
Storm-carved high tree broken.
Time was his thought but to reach the crest,
Proud achievement of years;
There, with snowfall come, he longed again to test
The autumn trail. His ears
Catch sound of falling leaf; so eagerly
He sniffs the laden breath
Of autumn's richness! Happily ...
Hastening ... toward ... his death?
