STILL NIGHT, by
First Line: Still night - only the tap of trees
Last Line: Except when the heart remembers.
Subject(s): Night; Silence; Bedtime

Still night—only the tap of trees
Beating their boughs together,
Staccato cadence the winter breeze
Plays in November weather.

Only the stroke of a distant clock
Tolling a slow eleven,
Only the snap of a tiny fire
Shooting its sparks to heaven.

Still night, going on silent feet
As the flames recede to embers;
Beauty that passes cannot return
Except when the heart remembers.
