WELL! I will never more complain, Or call the fates unkind; Alas, how fond it is, how vain! But self-conceitedness does reign In every mortal mind. 'Tis true they long did me deny, Nor would permit a sight; I raged; for I could not espy, Or think that any harm could lie Disguised in that delight. At last, my wishes to fulfill, They did their power resign; I saw her; but I wish I still Had been obedient to their will, And they not unto mine. Yet I by this have learned the wit, Never to grieve or fret; Contentedly I will submit, And think that best which they think fit, Without the least regret. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SONOMA FIRE by JANE HIRSHFIELD AS THE SPARKS FLY UPWARDS by JOHN HOLLANDER WHAT GREAT GRIEF HAS MADE THE EMPRESS MUTE by JUNE JORDAN CHAMBER MUSIC: 19 by JAMES JOYCE DIRGE AT THE END OF THE WOODS by LEONIE ADAMS A BETTER ANSWER (TO CHLOE JEALOUS) by MATTHEW PRIOR A DUTCH PROVERB by MATTHEW PRIOR A LETTER TO LADY [MISS] MARGARET-CAVANDISH-HOLLES-HARLEY, WHEN A CHILD by MATTHEW PRIOR |
