UPON PLAYING AT OMBRE WITH TWO LADIES, by MATTHEW PRIOR Poet's Biography First Line: I know that fortune long has wanted sight Last Line: And gives success in every suit -- but hearts. Subject(s): Card Games; Fortune; Playing Cards | ||||||||
I KNOW that fortune long has wanted sight, And therefore pardoned when she did not right; But yet till then it never did appear, That, as she wanted eyes, she could not hear; I begged that she would give me leave to lose, A thing she does not commonly refuse! Two matadores are out against my game, Yet still I play, and still my luck's the same; Unconquered in three suits it does remain, Whereas I only ask in one to gain; Yet she, still contradicting, gifts imparts, And gives success in every suit -- but hearts. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A DREAM OF GAMES by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN TEN MILLS: IN DIVES' DIVE by ROBERT FROST PROUST'S MADELEINE by KENNETH REXROTH SOLITAIRE UNDER THE OAKS by WALLACE STEVENS THE CARD-DEALER by DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI BLUEBEARD'S LAST WIFE: COMES PLAYINGCARD by OLIVER BROOK HERFORD A BETTER ANSWER (TO CHLOE JEALOUS) by MATTHEW PRIOR A DUTCH PROVERB by MATTHEW PRIOR A LETTER TO LADY [MISS] MARGARET-CAVANDISH-HOLLES-HARLEY, WHEN A CHILD by MATTHEW PRIOR |
