SONNET ON A PHOENICIAN TOMB, by KERR RAINSFORD First Line: A lonely grave above the rock-rimmed sea Last Line: Brings but new flowers to the wind-blown grass. Subject(s): Phoenicia | ||||||||
A lonely grave above the rock-rimmed sea, Where sea-birds scream, and white sea-flowers spread Their mantle o'er the long-forgotten dead Of other days -- dreamers who dauntlessly Fronted the challenging sea with sails unfurled, Out where the wild white horses beckoning prance About the trailing garments of romance, Beyond the pillared gateway of the world. And since that early morning of our race All history has been writ -- in blood and tears; Its shouting triumphs verberate and pass; While, in the hush of this enchanted place, The unremembered current of the years Brings but new flowers to the wind-blown grass. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ALIEN WOMEN; SONGKHLA, THAILAND by KAREN SWENSON TO AN AEOLIAN HARP by SARA TEASDALE THE DEATH OF HUSS by ALFRED AUSTIN THE SECOND BROTHER; AN UNFINISHED DRAMA by THOMAS LOVELL BEDDOES TO A FRIEND, WITH A VOLUME OF VERSES by MATHILDE BLIND TO THE SAME (JOHN LAPRAIK) by ROBERT BURNS TO LADY B- W-, PRESENTING THE AUTHOR WITH A MOIETY OF A LOTTERY TICKET by JOHN BYROM |
