NIGHT CLOSES IN, by BONSALL RHODES First Line: A red bird flashes silently by Last Line: Voiceless, yet vocal, night closes in! Subject(s): Night; Bedtime | ||||||||
A red bird flashes silently by. Sweetly far and plaintive a thrush Calls to the faint cool wind high In the trees and rustling in the brush, A chewink scratches in the dark loam Of the forest centuries and centuries old. Nervously a chipmunk seeks his home In a scarred oak, green and gold Between long shadows of late sunlight, While the winds to attentive ears Whisper of mystery in the coming night, Of noiseless energies and quick fears For all the small furred things. Slowly the great red sun falls Over the far horizon and flings A golden hush over the bird calls As its brilliant mantle seemingly drinks Up the day and a lonely star, High in the pale Heavens winks Through the twilight, like a faint scar. Mystery on mystery, shadow on shadow, Inevitable as the committing of sin That the moon's cool light may hallow, Voiceless, yet vocal, night closes in! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BREATH OF NIGHT by RANDALL JARRELL HOODED NIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS NIGHT WITHOUT SLEEP by ROBINSON JEFFERS WORKING OUTSIDE AT NIGHT by DENIS JOHNSON POEM TO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT by JUNE JORDAN COOL DARK ODE by DONALD JUSTICE POEM TO BE READ AT 3 A.M by DONALD JUSTICE |
