Subject(s): Sea; Ocean

How can I stay here, a thousand miles from the sea?
Where every vagrant wind is a sea-wind calling me?
The grey gulls follow my plow
And scratch in the fresh-turned sod;
Why do they follow me now --
Hopping from clod to clod?

Why do I wait here -- a thousand miles from the sea,
Where every fleecy cloud is a white sail calling me?
Barefoot I follow my plow
And the heads of my horses nod --
As I dream of a salty prow
And stumble -- from clod to clod.

I'll never go again -- the thousand miles to the sea;
I'll stay here forever and aye -- and hear it calling to me!
For I've gathered a bit of earth
And foresworn the right to roam;
And the rolling hills of my birth
Are green ... like the green sea-foam!
