SEA DREAMS, by JACK RICE First Line: How can I stay here, a thousand miles from the sea? Last Line: Are green ... Like the green sea-foam! Subject(s): Sea; Ocean | ||||||||
How can I stay here, a thousand miles from the sea? Where every vagrant wind is a sea-wind calling me? The grey gulls follow my plow And scratch in the fresh-turned sod; Why do they follow me now -- Hopping from clod to clod? Why do I wait here -- a thousand miles from the sea, Where every fleecy cloud is a white sail calling me? Barefoot I follow my plow And the heads of my horses nod -- As I dream of a salty prow And stumble -- from clod to clod. I'll never go again -- the thousand miles to the sea; I'll stay here forever and aye -- and hear it calling to me! For I've gathered a bit of earth And foresworn the right to roam; And the rolling hills of my birth Are green ... like the green sea-foam! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HALL OF OCEAN LIFE by JOHN HOLLANDER JULY FOURTH BY THE OCEAN by ROBINSON JEFFERS BOATS IN A FOG by ROBINSON JEFFERS CONTINENT'S END by ROBINSON JEFFERS |
