LE RAPPROCHEMENT, by
First Line: Sweet! I linger, but for thee
Last Line: Pledge us a bright morrow's meeting.
Subject(s): Love; Sea; Sleep; Sun; Ocean

SWEET! I linger, but for thee
Cold and sad like yon grey Sea.
Very life sleeps in thy love,
My best merit far above,
Far as the high Sun now lending
Hope of a divine descending.

One fond look, that ere I go
I may glisten in its glow!
Storm clouds brooding all the day
Oft have quenched a struggling ray;
Yet ere Sun and Sea are parted
It one kindling glance has darted.

One soft sigh before I leave,
Like a wistful breath at eve,
That when joyless gloom has cleared,
And the Sun and Sea have neared,
Seems to ask in plaintive wonder,
How the two could sulk asunder!

One embrace before we sever
For lone hours, perchance for ever!
Night draws no sad curtain mist
Till the two aflame have kissed:
Ere I sleep, let such a greeting
Pledge us a bright morrow's meeting.
