WHEN it's night, and no light, too,
Wakin' by yourse'f,
With the old clock mockin' you
On the mantel-she'f;
In the dark -- so still and black,
You're afeard you'll hear
Somepin' awful pop and crack, --
"Go to sleep, my dear!"

That's what Mother says. -- And then's
When we ain't afeard!
Wunder, when we be big mens,
Then 'ul we be skeerd? --
Some night Mother's goned away,
And ist us is here,
Will The Good Man wake and say,
"Go to sleep, my dear"?
