The first king who found out he was not God Grasped that grim knowledge through his loved one's death. Rich-robed, in contemplation of the sod, He watched her still, cold loveliness. No breath Heaved her soft bosom in the gathering dusk He held there in his kingly hand the husk That once had been his power. Dire dismayed, He learned he was not God, and thenhe prayed. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...UNHOLY SONNET 11 by MARK JARMAN LISTEN, LORD: A PRAYER by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON A PRAYER FOR THE FUTURE by GEORGE BARLOW (1847-1913) DIFFERENT WAYS TO PRAY by NAOMI SHIHAB NYE PRAYER DURING A TIME MY SON IS HAVING SEIZURES by SHARON OLDS WE WHO PRAYED AND WEPT by WENDELL BERRY PRAYERS AND SAYINGS OF THE MAD FARMER by WENDELL BERRY A PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING FOR THE SOUL OF AN ECCENTRIC MAN by FLORA SHUFELT RIVOLA |
