A PRAYER, by                    
First Line: Lord, let me think of life as an account
Last Line: God grant the balance may be on the right!

Lord, let me think of life as an account,
Where good or evil may the record hold,
Where day by day the items are set down
And evening time a balance shall unfold.

Let me be careful that no entry bear
The form of selfishness or wrong intent,
Let me, if error still be lurking there,
Search heart and mind to know that none is meant.

And when at last the items all are in,
The columns totaled with the fall of night;
When one by one the books are closed and sealed,
God grant the balance may be on the right!
