In Lenten garb—unlovely gray—
Pale March pursues her mournful way,
Save that her skies sometimes put by
Their veiling mists, and sunbeams try
To paint the promises of May.

With sober mien and like array
Doth rosy Katherine essay
Her lively traits to modify—
In Lenten garb.

She does it well, but smiles will play
About her dainty lips and stray
Upward until her eyes belie
Her saintly guise, and prophesy
That she—like spring—will not delay
In Lenten garb.
