When I see how the strong and fine grow old And withered and foolish who once were wise, Mumbling at a greyed world with rheumy eyes When all they had to say has long been told, It may be that those brave who go like you While voice has ring and eyes see far and clear, Taking the world in its stride with never a fear, Regretless leave, though years lived were so few. As you blended with the exotic sea Was there an aching flash of memory? I hope before that gallant heart was stilled You knew your life, though brief, had been fulfilled; Swiftly to die at love and life's full height Is worth perhaps early descent to night. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND |
