MARINE, by AMY REQUA RUSSELL First Line: You would have been as quiet as this sea Last Line: Nothing but ocean and the empty sky. Subject(s): Sea; Ocean | ||||||||
You would have been as quiet as this sea Where no waves lap tonight upon the shore; Where no surf breaks aloud, and silently You would have watched the gulls, as once before, Or pointed the horizon, brimming full -- An ocean bowl beneath a windless air, Where tides without a ripple move the pull Of hidden surges, welling slowly there. But you are gone; this peace alone remains, Smoothing the waveless sea, the quiet sand Into a scene on canvas -- lustered plains Of level water, dune and rocky land; And we who seek a meaning can descry Nothing but ocean and the empty sky. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HALL OF OCEAN LIFE by JOHN HOLLANDER JULY FOURTH BY THE OCEAN by ROBINSON JEFFERS BOATS IN A FOG by ROBINSON JEFFERS CONTINENT'S END by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE FIGUREHEAD by LEONIE ADAMS NO AUTUMN SUN by AMY REQUA RUSSELL |
