Only the birds are cheerful with the dawn -- the sky a dead eye horribly pried open -- and words spoken echo harshly from unfriendly stone. Now is the time of furtive-closing doors on beds where dulled heads toss in the soiled covers; the street mutters sullen promises of clanking cars. Now is the time of rest from tortured pain, as death with cold breath whispers beneath windows: without shadows birds hop gayly on the rain-wet lawn. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THIS MORNING, GOD by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR BURNING DAWN by HAYDEN CARRUTH DAWN by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON IN THE GARDEN AT THE DAWN HOUR by EDGAR LEE MASTERS EARLY RISER by NAOMI SHIHAB NYE WORDS WHEN WE NEED THEM by NAOMI SHIHAB NYE AFTERNOON TEA by RUTH SCHERMERHORN |
