PRAYER, by ADELAIDE FOERCH SCHINZEL First Line: Dear god, if I should die and then Last Line: This is my prayer. Dear god, grant it me. Subject(s): Prayer | ||||||||
Dear God, if I should die and then Long afterward be born again, I beg You set my spirit free To live as a bird or flower or bee, In some bright vale or fragrant glen. To dwell in the deep of a woodland pool, Lying calm and mysterious, dark and cool, Near a fallen tree or a bed of moss With bits of insect life skating across, This would gladden the heart of any fool. Or just to be born as a lump of sod, A seemingly useless, worthless clod; Yet it would nourish lush growing things, It would hum with the beat of tiny wings, And be blest by Your Footstep some holy day, God. This last is the best. A tall green tree, A pool, a flower, a bird, or bee Can pass in a breath. But eternal rebirth Would be the lot of the bit of earth. This is my prayer. Dear God, grant it me. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...UNHOLY SONNET 11 by MARK JARMAN LISTEN, LORD: A PRAYER by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON A PRAYER FOR THE FUTURE by GEORGE BARLOW (1847-1913) DIFFERENT WAYS TO PRAY by NAOMI SHIHAB NYE PRAYER DURING A TIME MY SON IS HAVING SEIZURES by SHARON OLDS WE WHO PRAYED AND WEPT by WENDELL BERRY PRAYERS AND SAYINGS OF THE MAD FARMER by WENDELL BERRY THE WITCH by MARY ELIZABETH COLERIDGE |
