Subject(s): Gardens & Gardening; Mothers; Summer

My mother's garden brings to me
A flower-misted symphony
Of delicately scented rhyme,
The fluted airs of summertime.

Her irises, at break of day,
Unfurl an iridescent lay;
The water-lily's velvet note
Salutes the morning sun by rote.

A miniature cadenza swells
From choirs of faintly scented bells;
And echo voices softly croon
The gay antiphonals of June.

A sudden, light, recurrent strain;—
The allegretto of the rain,
That draws each fainting blossom up
And leaves a kiss in every cup.

The dreaming larkspurs bend and sway,
But summer breezes have their way,
And mignonette and passion-flower
Must join the scherzo for an hour.

Allegro: stars again renew
The cooling silences of dew,
And moonlight fancies close the rhyme
Of flower-misted summertime.
