AT DELOS, by DUNCAN CAMPBELL SCOTT Poet's Biography First Line: An iris-flower with topaz leaves Last Line: Brings to the grave his tears. Alternate Author Name(s): Scott, D. C. Subject(s): Delos (island), Greece; Transience; Impermanence | |||
An iris-flower with topaz leaves, With a dark heart of deeper gold, Died over Delos when light failed And the night grew cold. No wave fell mourning in the sea Where age on age beauty had died; For that frail colour withering away No sea-bird cried. There is no grieving in the world As beauty fades throughout the years: The pilgrim with the weary heart Brings to the grave his tears. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...FROM THE SPANISH by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON CHAMBER MUSIC: 17 by JAMES JOYCE SOUTHERN GOTHIC by DONALD JUSTICE THE BEACH IN AUGUST by WELDON KEES THE MAN SPLITTING WOOD IN THE DAYBREAK by GALWAY KINNELL THE SEEKONK WOODS by GALWAY KINNELL AT THE CEDARS by DUNCAN CAMPBELL SCOTT |
