A soldier's emblem lost for many a year Was found beneath a dusty, rubbish pile; Mute witness to a hero's station here, Who proudly wore the symbol for awhile. On dark blue homespun coat, now in decay, Was finely sewn this honor token: old Despoiledits purple heart a sodden gray Forgotten badge, time-eaten, prey to mold! Some valiant soldier met a dangerous foe, Courageously he volunteered his life; His daring deedwho would not like to know: What victory was won through mortal strife?
