PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN, by MARGARET BENGSTON SEVERNS First Line: She moves in her surrounding realm Last Line: With naught but tawdry gold and jade? Subject(s): Beauty; Mortality | ||||||||
She moves in her surrounding realm, A sensuous feline holding thrall. She holds aloft her gilted head; To her, grim life is just a ball. Her toys are but the hearts of men. On conquest only does she thrive. Her shawl is gay deceitfulness Her splendid figure to enlive. She holds aloof of common things, In glory lauds her languid power; For worship only love she gives, And beauty is her only dower. But she too will be old some day. False glowing glamor, too, will fade. What then will be her life and joy, With naught but tawdry gold and jade? | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WISE MEN IN THEIR BAD HOURS by ROBINSON JEFFERS READING ALOUD TO MY FATHER by JANE KENYON DIRGE by MARGARET BENGSTON SEVERNS THE VISION by GEORGE SANTAYANA THALATTA!
