A trivial offense, long years ago, Laid wide my soul to sharp and sudden woe; But now this awful sin awakes no qualm, Arouses no remorse and seeks no balm. Oh I am surely dead! No goad or stab I give my soul can ever lift the slab That weights me down. There is no soothing pain Within this grave where so long I have lain. I drifted on from petty things to great; Have mercy, Lord!if it be not too late To beg a perfect miracle. I pray, Restore to life my sense of sin today! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND |
