TO VENUS IN A SCHOOLHOUSE, by KATHARINE SHATTUCK First Line: Rising once more out of the sea Last Line: Cool dark of the unconscious. Subject(s): Marble | ||||||||
Rising once more out of the sea Was Venus in that noise-crammed hall Where bells pinched immortality. From her entombing marble she Ascended, made warm and palpable And breathing, the lovely skeleton of beauty. Between the crowd she moved and coolly Smiling glittered along the wall Like sudden sunshine when it's cloudy. This happened once I swear and still She walks the subterranean Cool dark of the unconscious. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...IN THE MARBLE QUARRY by JAMES DICKEY A STUDY IN CLAY by NELLIE MACK BERKLEY CHURCHYARD by FREDERIC ROWLAND MARVIN TEMPIO DI VENERE by THOMAS STURGE MOORE THE COLLEGE ATHLETE by WALLACE RICE VISION by CHRISTIAN ERNST SCHNEIDER FROM MY ANCIENT ROCK by FILIPPO BALDINUCCI |
