TO VENUS IN A SCHOOLHOUSE, by
First Line: Rising once more out of the sea
Last Line: Cool dark of the unconscious.
Subject(s): Marble

Rising once more out of the sea
Was Venus in that noise-crammed hall
Where bells pinched immortality.
From her entombing marble she
Ascended, made warm and palpable
And breathing, the lovely skeleton of beauty.
Between the crowd she moved and coolly
Smiling glittered along the wall
Like sudden sunshine when it's cloudy.

This happened once I swear and still
She walks the subterranean
Cool dark of the unconscious.
