MIDNIGHT SAILING, by ELYDIA SHIPMAN First Line: The pier is dark; and shadows creep Last Line: And she was too late to say good-bye. Subject(s): Farewell; Sailing & Sailors; Parting | ||||||||
The pier is dark; and shadows creep. Is that a sound of creaking chain? Not all the ships that sail the deep Can bear away such black despair, Take from a heart such clutching pain. Not the liner's hulk, but looming fears Move her to cry: "Dear one, the years!" And: There was a word, chief of its clan, That means to lovers what farewells can, Though cast as light as a fisherman's fly: And she was too late to say good-bye. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE THREE CHILDREN by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN STUDY #2 FOR B.B.L. by JUNE JORDAN WATCHING THE NEEDLEBOATS AT SAN SABBA by JAMES JOYCE SESTINA: TRAVEL NOTES by WELDON KEES |
