THE BEAUTIES AROUND US, by JESSE SILL First Line: The beautiful scenes around us Last Line: Old utah, is just good enough for me. Subject(s): Roads; Travel; Paths; Trails; Journeys; Trips | ||||||||
The beautiful scenes around us We can never appreciate more, So we get into the Gas Bus And travel the country o'er. We journey from city to city And we pass the beautiful by, And then we think, "What a pity That there's no more beauty nigh." And we travel away into the East And we travel away into the West, Our lot with the trailer is cast. We like the jolts of the road best, And, then, we go away, over to Paris And we take a short cut to Rome. And we get so awfully careless We forget the beauties of home. We forget the beauties of the canyon And its streams all filled with fish, And the home scenes we will abandon Just for a mere thought or a wish. We view the Alps in their grandeur, But we forget other peaks more grand. For the sake of this trip we endure, And small pleasures I can't understand. So I'll camp at the foot of the mountains And I'll feast my eyes in delight As I look at the rills and the fountains And thank God for this pretty sight. For I have neither a Gas Bus or trailer Nor the price of a trip across the sea. And if I'd been born a good sailor, Old Utah, is just good enough for me. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...RICHARD, WHAT'S THAT NOISE? by RICHARD HOWARD LOOKING FOR THE GULF MOTEL by RICHARD BLANCO RIVERS INTO SEAS by LYNDA HULL DESTINATIONS by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN THE ONE WHO WAS DIFFERENT by RANDALL JARRELL THE CONFESSION OF ST.
