AUGUST NIGHT, by SARAH MIDDLETON SIMPSON First Line: Whoever once has lain Last Line: He will never fear to die. Subject(s): Night; Bedtime | ||||||||
Whoever once has lain Through all an August night Upon the warm brown earth When no moon spreads a light On fields that have been seared By blazing sun all day And darkness gives to them The stars and Milky Way -- Whoever once has loved The hard caress of grass Upon his outflung arm And watched great Cygnus pass Above his wondering eyes -- He will never fear to lie Throughout the longer night. He will never fear to die. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BREATH OF NIGHT by RANDALL JARRELL HOODED NIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS NIGHT WITHOUT SLEEP by ROBINSON JEFFERS WORKING OUTSIDE AT NIGHT by DENIS JOHNSON POEM TO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT by JUNE JORDAN COOL DARK ODE by DONALD JUSTICE POEM TO BE READ AT 3 A.M by DONALD JUSTICE ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT by BOB KAUFMAN DROUGHT IN SUMMER by SARAH MIDDLETON SIMPSON |
