SNOW ON THE TREES, by ANNA O. SMITH First Line: We wake to see a world the night has made Last Line: It seems the only scoffer is the wind! Subject(s): Winter | ||||||||
We wake to see a world the night has made -- In black and white arrayed is all the earth; How well the black limned trees show contrast's worth Since cotton snow on every branch was laid. Of other colors nature asks no aid, And yet of beauty rare there is no dearth, A beauty such as would rebuke all mirth And show us life in solemn light and shade. A sacred feeling falls upon the scene; The crow, in silence, comes on sable wing, When thus is winter's scale of colors thinned To black and white. And here with matching mien Are chickadees, too awed by snow to sing -- It seems the only scoffer is the wind! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...LOOKING EAST IN THE WINTER by JOHN HOLLANDER WINTER DISTANCES by FANNY HOWE WINTER FORECAST by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN AT WINTER'S EDGE by JUDY JORDAN CHAMBER MUSIC: 34 by JAMES JOYCE MY NEIGHBOR'S TREASURE by ANNA O.
