FORTITUDE, by GERTRUDE BROWN SMITH First Line: The fearfulness of life fills all my heart Last Line: Fear's grip is gone, my joy it cannot mar. Subject(s): Worship | ||||||||
The fearfulness of life fills all my heart With sorrow that hides beauty from my sight . . . The glory of a harvest moon-lit night, The flight of birds that from the woodlands start. Fear pierces me as if it were a dart. I have so little time on earth to stay And yet life baffles me in every way It takes all ecstasy from out my heart. Life matters not; it's courage I must hold, Fortitude will support me all the way. The wraith of fear I will drive fast and far. Now I can watch God's loveliness unfold. Beauty in all her forms will come each day; Fear's grip is gone, my joy it cannot mar. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...COMPANIONSHIP by MALTBIE DAVENPORT BABCOCK FOR I WILL CONSIDER YOUR DOG MOLLY by DAVID LEHMAN RUSSIAN CATHEDRAL by CLAUDE MCKAY LITTLE WHITE CHURCH by MARILYN NELSON A STEEPLE ON THE HOUSE by ROBERT FROST MATE (1) by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON ANSWER TO PRAYER by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON THE TEN COMMANDMENTS by GEORGE SANTAYANA AMERICA AT WAR by GERTRUDE BROWN SMITH COMING DOWN TO THE DESERT AT LORDBURG, N.M. by HAYDEN CARRUTH |
