TRIALS OF A SPRING POET, by JULIAN FRANCIS SMITH First Line: I sat me down beneath a tree Last Line: In safety in the city. Subject(s): Cities; Country Life; Creative Ability; Urban Life; Inspiration; Creativity | ||||||||
I sat me down beneath a tree To wait for inspiration; The gardener's hose soaked tree and me And spoiled my meditation. Where waving flowers and green paths led I went to court the Muses; I met a bull, and now I spread Court-plaster on my bruises. On wooded knolls I sought for rest In scenes of vernal beauty; My head dislodged a hornets' nest -- The hornets did their duty. If I should feel the urge again To write a springtime ditty, I'll stay at home and wield my pen In safety in the city. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...POEM FOR JAMES WRIGHT by ROBERT BLY THE CHINESE PEAKS; FOR DONALD HALL by ROBERT BLY THE GAIETY OF FORM by ROBERT BLY WAITING FOR THE STARS by ROBERT BLY A PARIS BLACKBIRD by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR A SUNDAY DRIVE THROUGH EAGLE COUNTRY by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR FALLEN by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR GENTLY BENT TO EASE US'; FOR BILL KNOTT by NORMAN DUBIE FOR RANDALL JARRELL, 1914-1965 by NORMAN DUBIE MISCHIEF by JULIAN FRANCIS SMITH |
