I sat me down beneath a tree
To wait for inspiration;
The gardener's hose soaked tree and me
And spoiled my meditation.

Where waving flowers and green paths led
I went to court the Muses;
I met a bull, and now I spread
Court-plaster on my bruises.

On wooded knolls I sought for rest
In scenes of vernal beauty;
My head dislodged a hornets' nest --
The hornets did their duty.

If I should feel the urge again
To write a springtime ditty,
I'll stay at home and wield my pen
In safety in the city.
