CIRCUMSTANCE, by
First Line: How do I come by sorry chance
Last Line: That wait in vain for me?

How do I come by sorry chance
To live within these walls,
And stay sedately under eaves
When soft rain falls?

For I would wear a scarlet dress
And the grey sky for cover,
And run forever down white roads
With a cloven-hooved lover!

How many twilights must I set
The china out for tea,
And hear dim laughter down the ways
That wait in vain for me?
