NORDIC, by JOEL ELIAS SPINGARN Poet's Biography First Line: Rainbows and stardust found no room Last Line: "has cradled you as well as me." Subject(s): Alps; Mountains; Rainbows; Hills; Downs (great Britain) | ||||||||
Rainbows and stardust found no room In the dark wood, in the grey gloom, Until a strange god poured a flood Of sweetness in this brutal blood; Then from their gothic chrysalis They flew to meet his melting kiss; They drank his blood as starry wine Beyond the sources of the Rhine; No Alpine pinnacles possess A faith beyond their soaring stress; Until at last they found his home Hid in a sunlit altar of Rome. "O sons of Thor," (do you hear his cry?) "In me you live, in him you die; Athens, Sinai, Nazareth Taught you the meaning of life and death; The glittering Mediterranean sea Has cradled you as well as me." | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...CALIFORNIA SORROW: MOUNTAIN VIEW by MARY KINZIE CONTRA MORTEM: THE MOUNTAIN FASTNESS by HAYDEN CARRUTH GREEN MOUNTAIN IDYL by HAYDEN CARRUTH IF IT WERE NOT FOR YOU by HAYDEN CARRUTH |
