LEGACY, by
First Line: Long after it will happen, when all is forgotten
Last Line: The aimless sound of the relentless sea.
Subject(s): Fear; Memory; Past

Long after it will happen, when all is forgotten,
That somewhere a woman walking into a greenhouse
In the dusty haze of noon when thought is suspended,
Will stop, fear like a finger on her heart
At the sound of a bee trapped beneath the glass.

Others whom the casual accident
Of clear skies and falling leaves and the smell
Of rain and woodfires and the hollow song of birds
Reminds the heart of what it should forget,
Of days and voices that will not come again;

Or who, at the lonely sound of trains at night
Will turn restlessly to shut out thought,
Or whose hearts will clench with fear at the whine of a wheel
On wet roads. And some will not endure
The aimless sound of the relentless sea.
