APRIL CLEANING, by HELEN I. STAPP First Line: My mind was stacked with dusty heaps of things Last Line: You set blue flowers in a crystal vase. | ||||||||
My mind was stacked with dusty heaps of things: Forgotten toys that lacked an arm or wheels, Worn packs of letters tied with faded strings, And high-top shoes with scuffed and slanting heels. The brilliant red of newer magazines Lay sharp against the mauve of Godey's Book, And fancy costumes bright with tinsel sheens Caught ropes of cobwebs in an unswept nook. You brought the clearing fragrances of spring Through opened panes, swept up the rolls of gray That lined the floor, and saved each lovely thing You found, but threw the useless scraps away. Then in the sunlight of this ordered place You set blue flowers in a crystal vase. | Other Poems of Interest...CRITIC AND POET by EMMA LAZARUS HOLES BORED IN A WORKBAG BY THE SCISSORS by MARIANNE MOORE WESTWARD HO! by CINCINNATUS HEINE MILLER INTROSPECTIVE by CHRISTINA GEORGINA ROSSETTI PEARLS OF THE FAITH: 19.
