PEACE, by
First Line: The moon hung low on the mountains
Last Line: Will be dawning, alas, too soon!
Subject(s): Holidays; Nature; Thanksgiving

The moon hung low on the mountains,
The shadows were deep within,
A night-bird was warbling anthems
Above the coyotes' din.

From out the trailing shadows
Came a tawny grizzly bear
Seeking a hollow tree-trunk,
Hoping for booty there.

And then, as the shadows deepened,
Came a whistle, piercing, clear,
The clatter of hoofs a-fleeting,
The echo of frightened deer.

Then all was still in the woodland,
The sign of peace and rest;
Even the dreamy night-bird
Had sought its quiet nest.

Oh, give me these three blessings,
The mountain, the forest, the moon,
For the day with its strife and heart-ache
Will be dawning, alas, too soon!
