PEACE, by ROSE MARGARET STEIN First Line: The moon hung low on the mountains Last Line: Will be dawning, alas, too soon! Subject(s): Holidays; Nature; Thanksgiving | ||||||||
The moon hung low on the mountains, The shadows were deep within, A night-bird was warbling anthems Above the coyotes' din. From out the trailing shadows Came a tawny grizzly bear Seeking a hollow tree-trunk, Hoping for booty there. And then, as the shadows deepened, Came a whistle, piercing, clear, The clatter of hoofs a-fleeting, The echo of frightened deer. Then all was still in the woodland, The sign of peace and rest; Even the dreamy night-bird Had sought its quiet nest. Oh, give me these three blessings, The mountain, the forest, the moon, For the day with its strife and heart-ache Will be dawning, alas, too soon! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE CULTURE OF GLASS by THYLIAS MOSS THE NIGHT BEFORE THANKSGIVING by NORMAN DUBIE OUR PRAYER OF THANKS by CARL SANDBURG THANKSGIVING DAY by LYDIA MARIA CHILD XAIPE: 65 by EDWARD ESTLIN CUMMINGS THE OL' TUNES by PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR A THANKSGIVING TO GOD [FOR HIS HOUSE] by ROBERT HERRICK SERVICE by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON |
