THE MAN WHO LOVES, by ZUELLA STERLING First Line: George washington wore buckle and rosette Last Line: "the man who loves his mother loves his wife." Subject(s): Mothers; Presidents, United States; Washington, George (1732-1799) | ||||||||
George Washington wore buckle and rosette, Had gracious manners and revered his mother, Composed a classic book on etiquette And thought of Martha more than any other. His mother's kitchen, red brick fireplace, Severe, bare walls, and flames from logs upspringing, Told tales of duty, not of courtly grace, With Spartan virtues to the household clinging. Yet filial love shone out from Washington Like moonlight shining on old-fashioned flowers; While love for Martha was both moon and sun To light her way through long, Virginia hours. So we remember, as we view his life: "The man who loves his mother loves his wife." | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...GEORGE WASHINGTON AND THE LOSS OF HIS TEETH by DIANE WAKOSKI GEORGE WASHINGTON by JOHN HALL INGHAM PATRIOTIC POEM by DIANE WAKOSKI HIS EXCELLENCY GENERAL WASHINGTON by PHILLIS WHEATLEY THE VOW OF WASHINGTON by JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER ANDRE'S LAST REQUEST [OR, REQUEST TO WASHINGTON] [OCTOBER 1, 1780] by NATHANIEL PARKER WILLIS THE WASHINGTON BICENTENNIAL by CLARA BECK GEORGE WASHINGTON by LAURA REW BIXBY |
