THE SWANS AT WELLS, by LETITIA STOCKETT First Line: With sidelong eye and regal throat Last Line: Here beauty dwells with jeopardy. Subject(s): Birds; Swans | ||||||||
With sidelong eye and regal throat The swans imperially float Upon the ancient palace moat. Seven princes are they of romance, Bewitched by some unhappy chance, Beggared of their inheritance. The gargoyles on the palace wall Watch stony-lipped, satirical; They stare, but never speak at all. The primrose sky, the thinning tree Distil a richer sorcery; Here beauty dwells with jeopardy. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...LOVE THE WILD SWAN by ROBINSON JEFFERS FLIGHT OF SWANS by ROBINSON JEFFERS TO A WILD SWAN by HENRY MEADE BLAND A STRAW SWAN UNDER THE CHRISTMAS TREE by DENISE LEVERTOV LEDA RECONSIDERED by MONA VAN DUYN |
