DESIGN OF A BRIDGE, by LUELLA STONE First Line: Star-rayed and beamed with dreams, it seems Last Line: Of steel instead of dreams. Subject(s): Bridges | ||||||||
Star-rayed and beamed with dreams, it seems, We drew a bridge; new-made, A steep arcade high as the sky Unaided. Unafraid In light so bright, throughout the night We built a bridge. A far Blue velvet carpet to a star Was laid. We found a leak; Soon found the ground foundations weak Astride downstream. Each side We tried we found unfortified For tide. Upstream, rough-shod, We plodded on the bridge. When scarred With strain of train, insane, We burned the bridge, unpaid for, charred It with debris! Then pain Rebuilt a frame deep-weighed with beams Of steel instead of dreams. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BRIDGE FOR THE LIVING by PHILIP LARKIN GRANITE AND STEEL by MARIANNE MOORE WATERLILIES AND JAPANESE BRIDGE by ALICIA SUSKIN OSTRIKER THE BRIDGE: PROEM.
