AMORIS EXSUL: 13. THE VILLA EMILIA, by ARTHUR WILLIAM SYMONS Poet Analysis Poet's Biography First Line: Gates that I never entered, under the shadow of the trees Last Line: The shadowy love that I lay at your portals, villa of dreams! Subject(s): Houses | ||||||||
Gates that I never entered, under the shadow of trees, Gates with the garden discreet behind the wall, Is it here, O garden discreet, is it here after all, Here and behind your gates, That the love of my life awaits In a golden sleep the dawn of my coming, under the trees? Under the quiet of trees the garden sleeps in the sun, Sleeps, and awaits one day a wakening hand; Is it I, O garden discreet, is it I shall stand One day at the gate, and claim Your princess in my name? For she sleeps and awaits the appointed coming, sleeps in the sun. Gates that I never entered, gates of my villa of dreams, Is there a princess at all that your shadows keep For her lover, O garden discreet, in a golden sleep? Ah, if behind your gates Only a shadow awaits The shadowy love that I lay at your portals, villa of dreams! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...TWO-RIVER LEDGER by KHALED MATTAWA SEVEN TWILIGHTS: 3 by CONRAD AIKEN FOR THE REBUILDING OF A HOUSE by WENDELL BERRY JERONIMO'S HOUSE by ELIZABETH BISHOP MENDING THE ADOBE by HAYDEN CARRUTH MY HUT; AFTER TRAN QUANG KHAI by HAYDEN CARRUTH NERVES by ARTHUR WILLIAM SYMONS |
