FORGOTTEN ORCHARD, by MURIEL DOE THURNEYSEN First Line: The air is sweet with apples ripening Last Line: Must touch no windfall in the tangled grass. Subject(s): Apples; Fruit; Orchards; Voices | ||||||||
The air is sweet with apples ripening In this forgotten orchard, where each tree Still finds its branches burdened frequently, Though there has long been none to care or bring Ladder and basket to the harvesting. Here birds and deer keep curious company; By right of use, it is their property And they may well think we are trespassing. Our voices have an unfamiliar sound; Brambles and firs catch at our alien feet As if we were not meant to pause, but pass . . . Though we were not the ones forsook this ground, Some spirit stays our hand -- we may not eat, Must touch no windfall in the tangled grass. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...VOICES OF THE AIR by KATHERINE MANSFIELD FIVE EASY POEMS; FOR ANNE-MARIE ALBIACH: 4 (MEZZA VOICE) by MICHAEL PALMER A SINGING VOICE by KENNETH REXROTH A VOICE FROM THE SWEAT-SHOPS (A HYMN WITH RESPONSES) by LOUIS UNTERMEYER FIRST SNOWFALL by MURIEL DOE THURNEYSEN |
