DEAR DAY, DEAR NIGHT, by ELIZABETH BARNET TOLDRIDGE First Line: The silver dawn has been / dappled with golden dye Last Line: And after that, dear night! Subject(s): Day; Night; Sleep; Bedtime | ||||||||
The silver dawn has been Dappled with golden dye. I feel myself akin To peoples of the sky! To climb a mountain high This day, with love in sight, A flock of dreams to fly -- And after that, dear night! The roses now begin (With wooing smile and sigh) To wear my spirit thin, Where watchful shadows lie! And threads of song -- to tie Me fast, till helpless quite -- He spins, whose wing I spy! And after that, dear night! How does the night come in? Softly as day. To dry A tear or two; to win Sleep without memory! Sorrow and Joy, they ply (Twin fates) their shuttles light -- By day, perhaps too nigh! But after that, dear night! L'Envoi My poet, you and I May take our last fond flight -- Still shall dear day go by; And after that, dear night! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BREATH OF NIGHT by RANDALL JARRELL HOODED NIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS NIGHT WITHOUT SLEEP by ROBINSON JEFFERS WORKING OUTSIDE AT NIGHT by DENIS JOHNSON POEM TO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT by JUNE JORDAN COOL DARK ODE by DONALD JUSTICE POEM TO BE READ AT 3 A.M by DONALD JUSTICE ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT by BOB KAUFMAN EIGHTEEN-DOLLAR TAXI TRIP TO TIZAPAN AND BACK TO CHAPALA by CLARENCE MAJOR |
