First Line: See how the world lies manacled and bound
Last Line: Torn by the wind from the rich hem of spring.
Subject(s): Demeter; Spring; Ceres

See how the world lies manacled and bound;
A prisoned goddess, ravaged, bosom heaving,
Bound by the bands of black November's weaving,
Weeping upon her ruin, with no sound
Save that of cold, bright tears, that beat the ground.
Thus will she ever lie, thus ever grieving
The brave rich daughter of her heart's conceiving,
Snatched by the black god of the silver hound.

I long for locusts in the almond trees,
The bright bronze pheasant, and the broken frieze
Of nude white Nymphs and wild-haired Bacchantes,
Upon whose breasts the lazy lizards cling
Watching the moths like flakes of colouring
Torn by the wind from the rich hem of spring.
