SKI TRAIL, by
First Line: So suddenly he left that those who came
Last Line: They saw his fresh ski-trail across the sky.
Subject(s): Skiing

So suddenly he left that those who came
Over the mountain as they did before,
Shouting hello, and beating at his door,
Found no delighted host to call each name.
With heavy tables laid for wine and game,
The candles lit, the coffee in the urn,
The chairs drawn up where resined pine logs burn
How could they know that he was not the same.
All day they waited, while a new snow fell,
Refusing to believe that he had gone;
He was the landmark they relied upon,
He was so jovial, and had been so well.

But when the stars came out and wind stood by,
They saw his fresh ski-trail across the sky.
