Poetry, said the sage of long ago,
Is but the sound that rises from the heart,
A sound that's made because it must be so,
And cannot be restrained if it would start;
No more than birds can help their burst of song,
Nor sea waves cease their rise and fall and run,
For these are universal things and strong,
For Poetry and Love and God are one.
Nor more can I suppress this love in me,
Nor change its course to other fields and men, --
This love that knows not how it came to be,
This love that neither knows its why nor when,
And of that love this poem's but a word
That rises from the heart and must be heard.
