A VALLEY RIDE IN WINTER, by MARY DUNCAN UPHAM First Line: The sunshine struck a glory on the day Last Line: Of state, the pageant vanishes, the day is fled. Subject(s): Day; Nature; Winter | ||||||||
The sunshine struck a glory on the day: The radiant hills companioned all our way, Their dazzling hoods Drawn to their brows against the winter's cold. In shimmering veils of mist, the valleys fold Their fertile fields;as some houri of old Conceals her charms; and 'neath fresh sheets of snow, Lie slumbering there: till, warmed by summer's glow, And roused from dreams, they hear The clarion call of nature to her broods: The glad response finds voice in burgeoning woods, In flood of ripening cornfields, wave on wave, Chasing the shadow by the mountain shed; In the pure lilt of bird calls, far and near Stabbing the silence, as with silver spear: Till as the sun sinks on his crimson bed Of state, the pageant vanishes, the day is fled. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...LOOKING EAST IN THE WINTER by JOHN HOLLANDER WINTER DISTANCES by FANNY HOWE WINTER FORECAST by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN AT WINTER'S EDGE by JUDY JORDAN |
