SUMMER NIGHT, by ELEANOR VOSWINKEL First Line: A hilltop is a witching place Last Line: On herald wings comes whispering. Subject(s): Night; Bedtime | ||||||||
A hilltop is a witching place To greet the soft wind face to face. And watch the stars that through the night Bedeck the sky with silver light. The birches are a magic screen, With moonlight filtering between, While softly from the wooded hill, I hear the plaintive whippoorwill, The clouds pile up a foamy mass, And shadows steal across the grass. A summer night -- how fair a thing -- On herald wings comes whispering. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BREATH OF NIGHT by RANDALL JARRELL HOODED NIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS NIGHT WITHOUT SLEEP by ROBINSON JEFFERS WORKING OUTSIDE AT NIGHT by DENIS JOHNSON POEM TO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT by JUNE JORDAN COOL DARK ODE by DONALD JUSTICE POEM TO BE READ AT 3 A.M by DONALD JUSTICE ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT by BOB KAUFMAN FIRE FALL IN THE YOSEMITE by ELEANOR VOSWINKEL |
