THE thrush starts singing down the road
Between the orchard and the shore,
Rejoicing from his green abode
That now the rain at last is o'er.

Upon a rock he marks me pass,
Shrugging his feathers free of dew,
Then darts into the shining grass
And plucks a dainty worm in view.

Then he and I forget the storm
That held us prisoners so long;
He gloating on his captured worm,
I jotting down this laughing song.
